Ken BerrickKen Berrick

Alameda COE

Ken Berrick, a board member in the Alameda County Board of Education, is the 2012 President of the California County Boards of Education, and is a member of the California School Boards Association Board of Directors. He has served on the CSBA Legislative Committee and served as the chair of the CCBE Legislative Committee in 2011. Berrick has been a member of the Alameda COE since 2008.

Berrick is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Seneca Family of Agencies, a nonprofit agency that provides school-based, community-based and residentially-based services for children with serious emotional issues and their families. Since its inception in 1985, Seneca has provided unconditional care and support to thousands of Alameda County children struggling with learning disabilities and life circumstances that interfered with their capacity to succeed in school. Seneca currently partners with families, school districts and counties throughout the Bay Area to provide the critical supports and services that children and families need to succeed in their homes, communities, and schools.

Berrick is a member of the California Child Welfare Council, as well as a former President and an Education Committee member of the California Alliance of Child and Family Services. His advocacy work on behalf of children, youth and families includes serving on several policy planning groups at both the county and state levels.  Ken has been a resident of Alameda County since 1983.

Dr. Ramón Flores

Region 11: 
Ventura COE

Dr. Ramón Flores is the California County Boards of Education President-elect and current board president of the Ventura County Office of Education, on which he has served since 2008.

Flores serves as the director of knowledge management and information technology at the Center for Seabees and Facility Engineering. In this capacity, Flores' team utilizes social, corporate and human capital in the development and cultivation of communities of practice.

Flores received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from California State University, Northridge. He earned his doctorate degree in educational technology from Pepperdine University. His dissertation examined the role of social, cultural and human capital on Latino students as they work to secure engineering degrees.

Flores is a registered professional engineer in California. He has also served as a part-time engineering instructor at Oxnard College and is former co-president of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Ventura County Chapter.

Heidi Weiland

Region 6:   
El Dorado COE

Heidi Weiland, a board member on the El Dorado County Office of Education, is the 2012 Vice President of the California County Boards of Education. She has served on the Board of Directors since 2010.

Weiland has served on the board of trustees for the El Dorado County Office of Education since 2000, including two years as president. She currently serves as the Region 6 county representative on the California School Boards Association Delegate Assembly. She also serves on the Sugarloaf Foundation Board—the oversight board for a visual and performing fine arts camp, and the El Dorado Arts Council Board, a local nonprofit that is the incubator for the arts in the county and the coordinating agency for the arts in local education.

Weiland is a self employed small business owner; a member of the El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce; former Executive Director for the El Dorado County Employees Association, Local #1; was a Facilitator/Instructor for the UC Davis Public Policy Institute; and member of the Mosquito Fire board.  Her local community activities include serving in various leadership roles and she currently serves on a committee of local business leaders and educators focused on the correlation between education and economic development.

Ray Peterson

Ray Peterson

Region 3: 
Sonoma COE

Ray Peterson is the Immediate Past President of the California County Boards of Education and a member of the California School Boards Association Delegate Assembly.  He has been a member of the Sonoma County Board of Education since 1994 and has served twice as board president. He has served on the Delegate Assembly since 2005 and is a graduate of CSBA's Masters in Governance program.

Peterson’s Past activities in CCBE include being a member of the legislative committee, awards committee, and serving as the CCBE secretary/treasurer, vice president and president-rlect. Active in political advocacy for education and youth, Peterson also served CSBA as a member of the legislative committee and as the governmental relations chair.

Peterson received a Bachelor of Science from California State Hayward and an MBA from Golden Gate University. He served on the adjunct faculty of Golden Gate University conducting seminars on accounting and management information systems. He retired after a 30 year career in finance and information systems.

He and his wife, Ettamarie live on their family farm outside Petaluma where their three children and seven grandchildren attended public schools.

Mike Walsh

Mike Walsh

Region 4: 
Butte COE

Mike Walsh, a board member in the Butte County Office of Education in Oroville, is the Director-at-Large, County for the California School Boards Association.

Walsh serves on California County Boards of Education’s Legislative Committee and the Charter School Task Force Committee. He has worked in education since 1992, and is currently the co-owner and founder of Beacon Services, a management consulting firm that specializes in strategic planning and leadership development. In this capacity, Walsh focuses on improving student achievement through reform in the areas of teaching, learning and assessment. As a leadership facilitator, he also provides career-specific workshops for students to help them discover and develop the leadership skills need to succeed in high school, college and their chosen profession.

Walsh holds a master’s and bachelor’s degree in organizational management, both from Ashford University, and is a graduate of Las Plumas High School in Oroville.

 Charlyn

Charlyn Tuter
CCBE Administrative Specialist

Charlyn Tuter joined CCBE as the administrative specialist in 2010. In this role, she represents CCBE at various meetings and events, works with the CCBE Executive Committee, Board of Directors and members to identify policy priorities and assists in the development of strategies to pursue these priorities.
    
Prior to joining CCBE, Charlyn worked at the California School Boards Association for a number of years. The majority of her time was in administration and leadership services, where she was the point person for the CSBA Board of Directors, Delegate Assembly and various committees. She is also experienced in planning events, supervising staff and coordinating activities.

Charlyn has earned an Administrative Office certificate through Heald Business College and a Supervisory certificate through California State University, Sacamento and she is currently attending Sacramento City College to earn a minor in Music.
