Purpose
The CCBE Legislative Committee reviews and takes positions on proposed legislation that affects county boards and county offices of education. This committee reviews all state and federal legislation that may impact county members and county offices of education. CCBE has developed a Legislative Policy Platform that focuses the organization’s lobbying efforts on behalf of county boards of education at the state and federal level. This is important because some legislative issues can be very specific to county boards and county offices of education. For example, years ago a bill that had originally included equalization for districts and county offices was passed after eliminating county offices. County offices are still waiting for the equalization of their funding and CCBE is lobbying to this effect.
Wanted: Outstanding legislators for CCBE’s Legislative Awards Program
Nomination period opens for Outstanding Legislator of the Year
The CCBE Legislator of the Year award is bestowed upon a member of the Senate or Assembly who has been actively involved in legislation or legislative activities supporting the work of county offices of education and their programs. The CCBE award is distinguished from a similar award bestowed by CSBA on a member of the Senate or Assembly who has been supportive more generally of local educational agencies. The CCBE Legislative Committee coordinates the selection process and is in need of your help to identify good candidates.
It is important that your nomination include as much specific information as possible, such as any legislation the Senator or Assembly member may have authored or supported in recent years that has had a direct and beneficial effect on county offices of education and the students we serve.
We encourage your board to participate in this program by nominating a Senator or Assembly member for CCBE's 2012 Legislator of the Year. Nominees must represent your county (in whole or in part). Nominations may be submitted by mail, fax, or email. Nominations must be received by Friday, September 7, 2012; nominations received after that date will not be considered. A letter must accompany each nomination form explaining why the nominated legislator should be honored.
Legislator of the Year Award
The legislative committee also nominates a senator and/or assembly member for CCBE’s Outstanding Legislator of the Year Award. The committee sends a nomination form to each county board of education encouraging them to participate. Upon receipt and review of all nomination forms, the committee announces the winners and the award is presented at next December at the 2012 CSBA Annual Education Conference in San Francisco at the General Membership meeting.
