CSBA Supports Release of Federal Funding for Student Mental Health Services

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

West Sacramento, Calif. -- State Superintendent Jack O’Connell recently announced the California Department of Education’s intention to move forward in allocating $76 million in federal funding for student mental health services. The California School Boards Association fully supports this action and commends the department’s decision to ensure students are provided these critical services.

CSBA finds the Governor’s decision to use his veto authority to deny millions of dollars in child mental health services appalling. Cuts to our schools and students have reached an all-time high. Students already face larger class sizes, fewer counselors and less support staff on campus as a result of well over $17 billion in reductions to education over the past two years. It is unthinkable to now eliminate the very services that provide assistance to students struggling with mental health issues. CSBA’s Education Legal Alliance is considering legal action to restore this important funding in order to provide the services our students so desperately need.
