Martha Fluor Elected President of the California School Boards Association

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

San Francisco, Calif. – Newport-Mesa Unified School District Board Member Martha Fluor, began her term as president of the California School Boards Association on Saturday, December 4, upon the close of the 2010 Annual Education Conference and Trade Show. Surrounded by more than 2,000 school governance leaders at the conference, Fluor encouraged her fellow locally elected officials to come together with a unified voice statewide to advocate for California’s public schools.

“A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step,” said Fluor. “Now is a time that we need to come together as the largest group of elected officials and insist that our students become the number one priority in our state.”

Fluor has served on the Newport-Mesa Unified School District board since 1991 and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Coastline Regional Occupational Program. She also serves as a liaison to various district communities, including the School Attendance Review Board, California Interscholastic Federation and Project ASK.

Fluor is an active CSBA board member, serving on the Delegate Assembly since 1992, the association’s nominating committee and a graduate of Masters in Governance. She is also involved in many community organizations, including Girl Scouts of Orange County Board of Directors, the KOCE-TV (PBS) Foundation Board and the National School Boards Association.

Fluor earned her Bachelor of Science degree from San Diego State University and holds two credentials in elementary and special education. She was a special education teacher for four years in the Orange Unified School District, as well as a bilingual instructional aide in Newport-Mesa.

Joining Fluor on the CSBA Executive Committee for 2011 will be Past President Frank Pugh, newly elected President-elect Jill Wynns and Vice President Cindy Marks. CSBA officers are elected by the delegates at the Delegate Assembly meeting prior to the CSBA Annual Education Conference and serve for one year in each position.
