Legislative Committee
Purpose
The CCBE Legislative Committee reviews and takes positions on proposed legislation that affects county boards and county offices of education. This committee reviews all state and federal legislation that may impact county members and county offices of education. CCBE has developed a Legislative Policy Platform that focuses the organization’s lobbying efforts on behalf of county boards of education at the state and federal level. This is important because some legislative issues can be very specific to county boards and county offices of education. For example, years ago a bill that had originally included equalization for districts and county offices was passed after eliminating county offices. County offices are still waiting for the equalization of their funding and CCBE is lobbying to this effect.
Legislator of the Year Award
The CCBE Legislator of the Year award is bestowed upon a member of the Senate or Assembly who has been actively involved in legislation or legislative activities supporting the work of county offices of education and their programs. The CCBE award is distinguished from a similar award bestowed by CSBA on a member of the Senate or Assembly who has been supportive more generally of local educational agencies. The CCBE Legislative Committee coordinates the selection process and is in need of your help to identify good candidates.
It is important that your nomination include as much specific information as possible, such as any legislation the Senator or Assembly member may have authored or supported in recent years that has had a direct and beneficial effect on county offices of education and the students we serve.
The legislative committee is responsible for nominating a senator and/or assembly member for CCBE’s Outstanding Legislator of the Year Award. The committee sends a nomination form to each county board of education encouraging them to participate. Upon receipt and review of all nomination forms, the committee announces the winners and the award is presented in December at the 2013 CSBA Annual Education Conference in San Diego at the General Membership meeting.
